William Wilberforce : The Story of William WilberforceWilliam Wilberforce is best known as the man who put an end to the transatlantic slave trade in the 18th century. Born in Hull, Yorkshire, on 24 August 1759, William Wilberforce was the only son of wealthy merchant Robert Wilberforce and his wife Elizabeth. William Wilberforce experienced bereavement in early life when his father and two of his three sisters died before he was nine years old. A two-year stay with his aunt and uncle in Wimbledon acquainted him with Evangelical Protestantism through John Newton, an influence from which his Anglican mother and grandfather removed him as soon as they could. His interest in religion faded when William Wilberforce was introduced into society and learned to enjoy the pleasures of theatre, clubs, gambling and drinking. As a student at St. John’s College, Cambridge, William Wilberforce met William Pitt, the future Prime Minister, who got him interested in a career in politics. A European tour in the company of Isaac Milner marked his return to religion and sparked a spiritual crisis from which he emerged as an Evangelical Christian and a man who pursued the two tasks Providence had trusted him with: the improvement of public manners and the gigantic task of a life-time: the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
